			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I actually read about this little feature a while back&#8230;like almost a year or so ago. I thought it was a neat feature, I just really had no use for it.</p>
<p>Recently though, I wanted to embed a PDF into a webpage and remembered seeing <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2009/09/embeddable-google-document-viewer.html">this article</a> from last year. I immediately went out to create a simple, useful function to be able to use this in WordPress.<span id="more-2688"></span></p>
<p>After jacking with the code for a bit, I ran it by <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://justinshattuck.com">Shat</a> who always helps fix up my code. He tweaked it, and stripped out extreaneous code that I had to make it easier to use. Thus, Shat and I present the Google Document Viewer functions hack.</p>
<p>Add this to your functions.php file and you&#8217;re in business to use the Google Document Viewer shortcode to display a PDF, PPT, or a TIFF file inline.</p>

<h3>Usage</h3>
<p>We&#8217;ve made it simple to use, just like all other shortcodes. And by simple, I mean simple! As you see above, the width, height, path, and style are all things to pass to the shortcode. The only one that&#8217;s obviously manditory is the path. The function already sets some height/width settings and those are easily changed in your function. I like 600X800 so that&#8217;s what the default here is.</p>
<p>Simply type: <strong>&#91;docview width=&#8221;<em>yourvalue</em>&#8221; height=&#8221;<em>yourvalue</em>&#8221; path=&#8221;<em>pathtofile</em>&#8221; style=&#8221;<em>extrainlinestyle</em>&#8220;&#93;</strong></p>
<h4>Usage variables</h4>

<li>width = enter specific width you&#8217;d like if it differs from the default values</li>
<li>height = enter specific height you&#8217;d like if it differs from the default values</li>
<li>path = enter full url path to document to render <strong>*mandatory</strong></li>
<li>style = enter any extra inline styling you&#8217;d like added to the iframe html element</li>

Yesterday morning, <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://diythemes.com/thesis/robots-meta-tags/">a post from him via DIYThemes.com</a> grabbed my attention. It was all about how to use the Robots Meta Tags option in the very popular theme <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://diythemes.com/plans/">Thesis</a>. While I dont use Thesis, I still found it extreamly interesting and started to investigate its declaration:</p>
<blockquote><p>One of the biggest problems with WordPress is the fact that it automatically generates different kinds of archive pages that can be indexed by search engines. From date-based archives (daily, monthly, yearly) to tags to categories, these auto-generated pages all contain duplicate content that doesn’t belong in search engines.</p></blockquote>
<p>Like many times before, he&#8217;s exactly right.</p>
<p>Maybe you don&#8217;t think its a big deal. Okay, I get that&#8230;but think of this:</p>
<blockquote><p>The job of search engines is to index your site’s pages and determine what your site is about. If you have 100 unique article pages, then ideally, search engines should only have to crawl 100 pages to index your site fully.</p>
<p>However, if you’re using categories, tags, and date-based archives (and depending on how overboard you tend to go with categorization and tagging), then you’re going to have at least one additional page per category, per tag, per month, etc.</p>
<p>Now, instead of having 100 pages to index, you may have 600 pages. Considering you only have 100 pages of unique content, forcing a search engine to index 600 pages to determine what your site is about just doesn’t make any sense.</p>
<p>Think of it this way: Would you rather read a 100-page book or a 600-page book that tells the exact same story? Further, which one do you think you’ll understand better? Which will hold your focus better?</p></blockquote>
<p>Wow, now that&#8217;s heavy.</p>
<h3>Functions Hack</h3>
<p>So since its implemented with Thesis so beautifully, and since I love to hack my functions.php file&#8230;I figured, I&#8217;d do just that. I&#8217;d put together a super-tiny function that fixes this, albeit small, issue for my specific customization.</p>

<p>There&#8230;that&#8217;ll do it.</p>
<p>The first part checks to see if its the home page (since &#8220;<em>noodp</em>&#8221; and &#8220;<em>noydir</em>&#8221; are domain specific settings), then sets the proper search engine robot setting to allow indexing, link following, archiving and prevents search engines from pulling extra information regarding your site from the <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.dmoz.org/">ODP or DMOZ</a> and the <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://dir.yahoo.com">Yahoo! Directory</a>.<br />
The second part checks to see if the page is any archive type page (Category, Tag, Author and Date based pages are all types of Archives), or any taxonomy related pages; and sets the information for those types of pages. This sets the search engine robot setting to allow indexing, tells it that links are to NOT be followed, and to not archive the page.</p>

<p>The first is the wide-open door for amateurs to create. This is blogging and online art, wikipedia and the maker movement. These guys get a lot of press, and deservedly so, because they&#8217;re changing everything.</p>
<p>The second, though, is distracting and ultimately a waste. We&#8217;re creating a culture of clickers, stumblers and jaded spectators who decide in the space of a moment whether to watch and participate (or not).</p>
<p>Imagine if people went to the theatre or the movies and stood up and walked out after the first six seconds. Imagine if people went to the senior prom and bailed on their date three seconds after the car pulled away from the curb.</p>
<p>The majority of people who sign up for a new online service rarely or never use it. The majority of YouTube videos are watched for just a few seconds. Chatroulette institutionalizes the glance and click mentality. I&#8217;m guessing that more than half the people who started reading this post never finished it.</p></blockquote>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The pursuit of happiness is something this nation knows all about. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of it is what every American wishes to obtain. Unfortunately, I believe that a lot of Americans aren’t happy and/or can’t find a path to happiness that suits them and their needs. It’s so unfortunate that in the land of plenty, few are genuinely happy.</p>
<p>In ancient times, the people of the world didn’t have a lot of the things that we have today and ultimately take for granted. Even though the Bible and our history books have taught us that these ancient people weren’t always happy, they seem to have gotten by just fine. So apparently, the things that the human race has created over time haven’t made us any happier. Sure, these things were made for our conveniences, and some really do help us out, but they haven’t succeeded in elevating our level of true happiness or created any more time for us. And certainly our happiness hasn’t decreased due to lack of things, or even lack of money.<br />
<span id="more-465"></span><br />
<h3>Cause of Unhappiness</h3>
<p>Have you ever stopped and wondered what some of the overall causes of our unhappiness are? I think at the root of our overall unhappiness is that we are just not satisfied with what we’ve accomplished. It’s the &#8220;Tomorrow Syndrome&#8221; of always wanting more or always wanting to achieve that next level has made us unable to enjoy the things that we have now. Not that achieving big things in your life is wrong, it just seems as if we’re never satisfied with it. This leaves us thinking that maybe we are not where we would like to be, spiritually, professionally or in life, or maybe we just don’t have what we thought we would have.</p>
<p>We are also victimized by the &#8220;Yesterday Syndrome.&#8221; This is evident in those who are always wishing they could change the past; always wishing they could redo something. Like they could somehow live the Butterfly Effect, or have a time machine and change everything bad to good. Those who are trapped by this, I feel, are often those caught up in a midlife or identity crisis trying to relive some of the days of old or to regain their childhood that maybe they didn’t get to live out. You simply cannot live &#8211; truly live, like this.</p>
<h3>Stepping Up | Changing</h3>
<p>Changing the way we think and live is the only way to find happiness in our lives. The only way to do that is to savor all of your todays. &#8220;So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.&#8221; <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%206:34&#038;version=NLT">Matthew 6:34</a> Don’t try to predict what tomorrow might bring&#8230;no one on this earth knows what tomorrow has in store. &#8220;This is the day the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.&#8221; <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm%20118:24&#038;version=NLT">Psalm 118:24</a> There is absolutely no guarantee of tomorrow so enjoy the things today with all that God has allowed you to have. It&#8217;s a gift.</p>
<p>We’ve all heard this cliché, but you have to enjoy the trip as well as look forward to the destination or you’ll end up missing out on what could be a tremendous experience. Take the time to look around, notice the flowers, and take in the aroma of a fresh rain. You may find it newly exhilarating to pause, reflect, marvel at God&#8217;s creation and take a deep breath all-the-while reminding yourself that breath itself is spiritual. &#8220;Then the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person.&#8221; <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Gen%202:7&#038;version=NLT">Genesis 2:7</a> On the contrary, you’ll find it quite depressing if you wait until tomorrow to realize you had or could have had a good time today.</p>
<h3>The world can give you nothing, God gives everything</h3>
<p>You also can’t count on the things that are outside your means to try to attain happiness. Many of the things of this world cannot truly make you happy; the kind of real happiness that we all seek. This includes money, clothes, cars, etc… Don’t be afraid to once and for all lay down the proper priorities for your life and for your family, but most importantly, put God at number one and <strong>live by them</strong>.</p>
<p>Everyone has possibilities, opportunities and talents…that’s part of what being human is about. Therefore do what you can do when you can with what God has given you. This involves being productive at the talents that God gave you, finding your <em>spiritual gifts</em>, accepting them, and <em>helping others</em> with that gift humbly.</p>
<h3>Go Get It!</h3>
<p>For happiness to affect your life, it’s impossible to run from those problems you’re facing. You have to confront them head on. You have to introduce the elephant in the room. In <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2%20Corinthians%206:2&#038;version=NLT">2 Corinthians 6:2</a> the apostle Paul said, &#8220;Now is the accepted time&#8221;, so if you want happiness, do what’s necessary <strong>now</strong> to get it. You can’t sit on the sidelines of life in a constant pattern of sitting on the bench waiting to be called to join the team; you must be responsible for your own spiritual &#038; physical well-being right now.</p>
<p>True happiness also comes with companionship. Most people aren’t truly happy without some sort of companionship in their lives; we need others in and around our life to make it fulfilling&#8230;family, friends, church, etc&#8230;  But, that kind of <strong>real</strong>, fulfilling, enjoyable happiness comes when you find one thing. That one thing is Jesus Christ. He is the key to the Pursuit of Happiness. Once you&#8217;ve found this, everything else seems to find new meaning.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>So I&#8217;ve been uploading photos for a few months now to my photoblog and it&#8217;s been interesting. I love the Autofocus theme and all the amazing things it does, but it lacked something&#8230;</p>
<h3>What&#8217;s Missing</h3>
<p>My <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://photos.tquizzle.com/">photoblog</a>, that is using the amazing <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.allancole.com/wordpress/themes/autofocus">Autofocus</a> theme is simply that&#8230;a simple photoblog of some of my photos taken from any and everywhere.</p>
<p>I noticed something wasn&#8217;t right and I had one gripe about it&#8230;on single pages it lacked a bit of class and touch that I think photoblogs should have. Mainly I was looking for a previous/next thumbnail support when it displayed previous and next navigation links under the content. I thought that would be a perfect place to put these little gems.</p>
<p>By default, Autofocus theme puts the navigation to the previous and next posts underneath your content photo. Makes perfect sense, but I figured it&#8217;s a friggin photo blog, why not display the previous/next available photo too?<span id="more-411"></span><br />

<h3>Modifications</h3>
<p>So tonight, I played with the Autofocus code a bit and produced what I had wanted.</p>
<ul>
<li>Now when you go to an individual image page, you&#8217;ll see all the pertinent information about that photo, but underneath where the preview of the previous and next posts are, you&#8217;ll see those post&#8217;s thumbnail too.</li>
<li>The image shown is the thumbnail size setting which is 150X150 of the photo.</li>
<li>The previous post&#8217;s image auto floats left while the next post&#8217;s image floats to the right.</li>
</ul>
<p>That&#8217;s about it, check it out on my <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://photos.tquizzle.com">photoblog</a> and please give me some <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="/contact/">feedback</a> or <a href="http://www.tquizzle.com/2009/11/21/previous-post-next-post-image-thumbnails/#respond">comment love</a>. Might make that into a little plugin or something.</p>

In effort to make browsing TQuizzle.com a little easier for the occasional mobile user, I installed the very popular <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://bravenewcode.com/wptouch">WPTouch</a> tonight. I have to say, this plugin has got a lot of good features and I&#8217;m sure with time it will only get better.</p>
<p>Installing it now is a snap and I had it up and running in less than 5 minutes. Works just as advertised and I whipped out my iPhone to test it out and straightaway, it looked perfect. Nice, clean, simple mobile interface for the blog that users can easily navigate and heck, even comment if they so choose to.</p>
<p>I was a big proponent of MoFuse for a long time, but they just weren&#8217;t doing it for me anymore. Sticking ads in my content, not giving me near the customization that this simple plugin does.</p>
<p>So now if you get a tweet about my site being updated or you happen across it using a mobile browser, you should see the magnificent WPTouch in action making your mobile experience on <a href="http://www.tquizzle.com" rel="me">TQuizzle.com</a> much more enjoyable.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Saturday night while watching UFC 104 over at <a href="http://twitter.com/tshaiebly" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">@tshaiebly</a>&#8217;s, many of us in the room thought Shogun won the main event. It was close no doubt, but I thought he pulled it off, but the judges saw it differently.</p>
<p>Apparently, UFC Pres. Dana White felt like Shogun won too. That&#8217;s one thing about Dana White, he&#8217;ll tell you what he really thinks and you got to love that. When asked about another fight, a controversial call by veteran Ref Steve Mazzagatti, White said he that he &#8220;shouldn&#8217;t even be allowed to watch MMA, let alone referee it.&#8221;</p>

While I&#8217;ve never been to a music festival before, this blew my mind. So many bands, so many people, so many things to see. It was a blast.<br />
A highlight of what I remember us seeing is as goes; <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.drdogmusic.com/">Dr. Dog</a>, some amazing Jazz guy, <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://knaanmusic.ning.com/">K&#8217;Naan</a>, <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.bassnectar.net/">Bassnectar</a> (briefly), <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.thieverycorporation.com/">Thievery Corporation</a> &#038; <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.kingsofleon.com/">Kings of Leon</a>. What an afternoon lineup!<br />

<a rel="shadowbox" href="http://www.tquizzle.com/uploads/2009/10/PICT0106-768x1024.jpg"><img src="http://www.tquizzle.com/uploads/2009/10/PICT0106-225x300.jpg" alt="ACL 2009" title="ACL 2009" width="225" height="300" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-351" /></a>We flew down there Thursday afternoon to make sure we got a good night&#8217;s rest before heading to ACL on Friday. Since they had already sold out on all the Saturday and Sunday tickets, we were able to just get the Friday tickets which actually worked out to our advantage. It rained&#8230;all day Saturday and most of Sunday. We heard of some ACL&#8217;ers who were covered in mud and had a terrible time in the rain. I&#8217;m sure it was great those days too, but I&#8217;m actually happy we only went on Friday.</p>
<p>Saturday night we saw a phenomenal DJ named <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.bassnectar.net/">Bassnectar</a>. I&#8217;d suggest checking him out. Amazing sold-out show he put on at a club called La Zona Rosa in downtown Austin. 3 + hours of non-stop beats and this guy was killin it.</p>
<p>Sunday was just a day to walk S. Congress and do a little shopping. Kinda slow&#8230;my kind of day.</p>
<p>All-in-all, the trip to Austin was a blast. I&#8217;m ready for some &#8220;relaxation&#8221; vacation now&#8230;</p>

One of the best things is the taskbar in Windows 7. It&#8217;s totally different than what I was expecting to see when I downloaded the bata low these many months ago and started my test run.</p>
<p><img alt="" src="http://lee-soft.com/viglance/images/viglance_aeropeek_small.jpg" title="ViGlance" class="alignright" width="320" height="240" />If you&#8217;ve got an XP machine and are not planning on updating it to Windows 7, check out this little gem that turns your ordinary XP taskbar in to the new Windows 7 &quot;pin&quot; look and feel. </p>
<p>ViGlance is freeware that adds this funcitonality. While the footprint is 10MB, its not too bad considering what its doing. It also adds that nifty thumbnail preview of pinned items and replaces that boring old-school start button to a Windows 7 orb.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>While I mostly use a PC at work and a Mac at home, occasionally I use my &#8220;other&#8221; laptop. That special one who only gets powered on a couple of times a month to do random and various tasks and as the title would suggest, it&#8217;s running Windows 7.</p>
<p>So, I have an ESXi 4.0 server here at home that runs a Linux server, a windows 2003 server and other various guest OS flavors. As of ESX 4.0, the client was renamed and updated to vSphere Client instead of vMWare Infrastructure Client. That client piece is the piece that lets you modify your ESX host and all of its virtual machines, datastores, network, etc&#8230;</p>
<p>As luck would have it&#8230;the client doesn&#8217;t work under Windows 7. Blast! You get this error: <br /><strong>Error parsing the server &#8220;SERVER IP&#8221; &#8220;clients.xml&#8221; file.</strong></p>
<p>With Google and a little patience, I got it working again &#8211; for the first time.<a rel="shadowbox" href="http://www.tquizzle.com/uploads/2009/08/ESX.jpg"><img src="http://www.tquizzle.com/uploads/2009/08/ESX-300x212.jpg" alt="ESX" title="ESX" width="300" height="212" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-339" /></a></p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a little rundown of how to get VMWare&#8217;s latest client product to work under Windows 7:<br />

For starters, your system needs a file from Microsoft&#8217;s .NET Framework on an earlier system of Windows. <em>I got mine from an XP machine.</em></p>
<ol>
<li>Obtain a copy of <em><code>%SystemRoot%\\Microsoft.NET\\Framework\\v2.0.50727\\System.dll</code></em> from a Windows Vista or below that has .NET 3.5 SP1 installed.</li>
<li>Create a folder on your Windows 7 machine where the vSphere client is installed and copy the file from step 1 into this folder. For example, create the folder under the vSphere client launcher installation directory <em><code>(%ProgramFiles%\\VMware\\Infrastructure\\Virtual Infrastructure Client\\Launcher\\Lib+)</code></em>. </li>
<li>Now we need to tell the vSphere client that we&#8217;re going to run the product in Development mode. So, in the vSphere client launcher directory, open the VpxClient.exe.config file in a text editor and add a &lt;runtime&gt; element and a &lt;developmentMode&gt; element as shown below. Save the file.<br />

<li>Create a batch/cmd file (e.g. *VpxClient.cmd*) in the same location. In this file add a command to set the DEVPATH environment variable to the folder where you copied the System.dll assembly in step 2 and a second command to launch the vSphere client.<br />

<li>Replace the shortcuts in the start menu to point to the batch file created in the previous step. Change the shortcut properties to run minimized so that the command window is not shown.<br />
You can now use the VpxClient.cmd (or the shortcut) to launch the vSphere client in Windows 7.

<p><em>Note that this workaround bypasses the normal .NET Framework loading mechanism so that assembly versions in the DEVPATH folder are no longer checked.</em>

<p>A co-worker of mine shared this little gem, and I thought it was absolutely hilarious. I can just think of the times I&#8217;ve been to Wal-Mart recently and thinking that I would&#8217;ve Bingo&#8217;d easy in a matter of minutes.</p>
<p>Take this with you during your next trip&#8230;and yell out &#8220;Bingo&#8221; when you win. Its not so much that you won or anything&#8230;but a fun game that probably leave you in stitches.<br />

<blockquote><p>It&#8217;s not easy to stay in touch with friends and family when you&#8217;re fighting in a country thousands of miles from home. I spent 13 months in Iraq as an Army journalist where I flew in Black Hawks over Balad and Baghdad working to generate news coverage about my fellow soldiers. The whole experience was physically and emotionally draining, but it was especially difficult when I called home at the end of the day and nobody was there to answer.</p>
<p>For servicemen and women who are constantly on the move, having a single number and an easy way to retrieve messages from loved ones can be invaluable. To help our service members communicate with their loved ones and show our support to those serving our country, Google is launching a new program. Starting today, any active U.S. service member with a .mil email address can sign up for a Google Voice account at <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.google.com/militaryinvite">www.google.com/militaryinvite</a> and start using the free service within a day.</p>
<p>When you deploy, your life is put on hold. While you live and work in a different world, everyone else moves on with life back home. Your family and friends keep moving, and this sometimes means it&#8217;s just not possible for them to stay awake until 2 a.m. to receive a phone call. Calling Iraq or Afghanistan is seldom an option.</p>
<p>Google Voice provides a solution to some of these problems. Service members can set up an account before they deploy. Or if they&#8217;re already deployed, families can now set up an account for their service member. Loved ones can call to leave messages throughout the day, and then when that service member visits an Internet trailer, all the messages are right there. It&#8217;s like a care package in audio form.</p>

<p>I&#8217;m really glad that Google&#8217;s doing this. This could mean the difference between families getting to leave daily voice mails and just simple &#8220;hellos&#8221; from home and only being able to occasionally get or make a phone call or a letter. This &#8220;Google&#8221; way, the service men and women have the opportunity to listen to these messages when they get the chance to get online. Whether that&#8217;s daily or weekly for them, it&#8217;s nice to see a system like this in place and a company like Google championing getting military families in touch a little easier.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>So this week, a co-worker and I had the opportunity, or in my case the sheer blessing, to go to Dallas for a one week to an ESX training seminar. I couldn&#8217;t be more excited about testing out this new technology very soon.</p>
<p>At work, we&#8217;ve already jumped ahead and bought an IBM Blade Center with 10 blades to run this thing, we just haven&#8217;t had the knowledge and experience to set things up properly or really know the ins and outs of the systems and how to create them using VMware&#8217;s &#8220;best practices.&#8221; This week has been a complete eye opener for me.</p>
<p>I enjoyed this experience immensely, but of course when you get back to the &#8220;real world&#8221; its the same old grind. Trying to take what we learned this past week to the production environment is still laced with tons of red tape and political decisions that are out of our control. Basically, we cant exactly do what we learned&#8230;we&#8217;re doing what they&#8217;ll let us do which is a little disheartening.</p>
<p>All that to say, I&#8217;m very excited to have this new found knowledge and sometime soon becoming a <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://mylearn.vmware.com/mgrReg/plan.cfm?plan=9656&#038;ui=www">VCP</a>.</p>
